More Glazed Alcohol Ink Washers

A couple of weeks ago I used some Judikins Diamond Glaze to make some of my alcohol ink washers shiny. It didn't go quite to plan, so I thought I'd try some Dimensional Magic.

At first it went much better. The nozzle on the Dimensional Magic is much finer and allowed me to put down a nice ring of glaze. However, the glaze is thinner than the Diamond Glaze, and it ran into the same problem of several of them losing surface tension and collapsing into the hole in the center.

Also, the Dimensional Magic seemed to react with some of the washers and made the colors run together. As you can see in the photo above with  some collapsed glue that dried with a red tint.

I'm still trying to figure out how to make the glaze work. There are a couple of brands I haven't tried--and maybe the Diamond Glaze in the smaller bottle with a finer tip would work better.

At any rate, I took my best glazed washers from the last two projects and was able to make a couple of necklaces out of them. If you have any tips for glazing washers, let me know in the comments.

  1. I recommend Inkssentials Glossy Accents! Here's an example of some earrings I made that are glazed with it: https://www.facebook.com/erulissejewelry/photos/a.145064615538689.30673.144971082214709/716909161687562/?type=3&hc_location=ufi

  2. The ink on the washers needs to well dried and cured before being sealed. I haven't decided on the best time. I have read that a water-based sealer should be used as one with acetate may make the ink bleed. (Allowing more drying/curing time might change that.) I am using Golden Polymer Varnish with UVLS (Gloss) which I purchased at a Dick Blick store. It dries to a clear, slight-gloss finish. It is mixed ... 4 part gloss to 1 part water. It is easy soap and water cleanup with very low odor (no odor noticed by me). I use a small foam brush for application.

    1. Good tips. The Golden Polymer Varnish sounds perfect--I'll have to check it out!

  3. Krylon Kamar spray should be sprayed on the ink to prevent bleeding. Can also be used for creating ink layers. After spraying with Kamar when the project is finished, spray with UV protection spray and then complete it with varnish for the brightest, long lasting results for alcohol ink. That should also help when layering Glossy Accents for the shine and texture wanted.

    1. I have definitely started using Kamar to seal before using the glossy accents or dimensional magic. I hadn't thought of using the kamar to create an isolation layer of sorts. Sounds like a fantastic idea.
